Rooktail, previously named Rook, was a kit of The Sisters, born while they traveled through the old forest territories. He was cast out of the group to go on his wander at 6 moons old, like all other toms born to The Sisters. Though an adept hunter and strong fighter thanks to his large size, Rook was very lonely and didn't enjoy having only spirits for company. He heard talk of the forest clans from Kittypets, and sought out ThunderClan to join their ranks for camraderie.
It had been just eight seasons since the exile of Oakstar, shortly before the birth of Pinekit, when Beestar and Doefeather encountered Rook at their borders. Doefeather had her apprentice, Daisypaw, in tow when Rook made his request. Beestar and Doefeather enthusiastically accepted Rook's request to join the clan, due to his large size and hunting skills, while Daisypaw was more suspicious towards the outsider. The leader and deputy were shocked to learn Rook was just seven or eight moons old, renaming him Rookpaw.
Because of Rookpaw's size and strength, he was promoted to a warrior very young, at just nine or ten moons old. Daisypaw, two moons his junior, retained something of a one-sided rivalry with him, but his easygoing nature and lack of hostility eventually won her over as his friend. Rooktail enjoyed living in ThunderClan territory because he seldom saw wandering spirits, and enjoyed the constant company of other cats and teamwork of ThunderClan's hunting styles. He attempted to bury his past and his powers, doing his best to assimilate to ThunderClan's culture and customs, and eventually many warriors forgot that he hadn't been clanborn.
Rooktail wasn't aware he had passed his powers onto Goosekit since he had been sworn to secrecy by Cloudberry and Doestar. After his death, Rooktail was horrified to learn what Goosefeather was being put through; and he was enraged when StarClan forbid him from communicating with his son; they wanted to keep the illusion that Goosefeather's powers were a gift from StarClan. Rooktail's anger made him want to leave and wander like a ghost of The Sisters, but the StarClan cats warned him they would not allow him to return if he left. Begrudgingly, he resigned to his fate, awaiting the day Goosefeather would arrive in StarClan so he could apologize for the legacy he'd burdened his son with.
Rooktail was unaware of Stormtail's inappropriate attraction to his daughter, Moonpaw. However, when Moonflower became mates with Stormtail and then pregnant suspisciously fast after her warrior promotion, Rooktail was furious with Stormtail, disowning him as his former apprentice. His anger caused a rift between him as his daughter; he wanted the best for her, but she was a victim of manipulation by Stormtail, believing her father to be overbearing and controlling. Rooktail was even more enraged by Stormtail's decision to abandon Moonflower after her kitting, and his neglect of Bluestar and Snowfur. Rooktail, normally easygoing and kind, remains openly and uncharacteristically hostile to Stormtail in StarClan. Moonflower, now older and more mature, recognizes that she was a victim, and has come to be grateful for her father's care for her.
